The performance of naturally ventilated smoke shafts as described in BS 5588 Part 5 has been assessed in terms of their performance compared to external wall mounted ventilation. An alternative design of naturally ventilated smoke shaft has also been proposed. The full set of conclusions and recommendations are published in BRE Report 79204, Smoke Shafts protecting Fire Fighting Shafts: their performance and design. This publication provides practical information on the design of smoke ventilation of fire-fighting shafts. It significantly improves and clarifies aspects of the current design guidance and may bring a more flexible innovative approach to the design of large footprint and/or large buildings.
