NCFS Part 1 covers requirements for the construction of normally reinforced concrete building frames of in-situ concrete, precast concrete, and hybrid systems. It is especially relevant for structures designed to BS 8110 and EC2. Where the NCFS is intended to be used for water-retaining structures, structures in extreme environments, those produced by specialist construction techniques or those of a specialist design nature, NCFS Part 2 (Project Specification) should include the appropriate amendments and additions.
NCFS Part 1 specifies materials, workmanship and construction. It also includes a number of sketches which illustrate how the tolerances specification should be interpreted.
Specific obligations are placed on the Frame Contractor, the Employer and the Engineer. In some cases these will be different organisations; sometimes any or all will be represented by the same organisation. However, their responsibilities remain the same.
It is assumed that all work will be carried out under the current Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations and the Construction Design and Management Regulation.
Where specifications, standards or regulations are referred to they shall be to the latest editions.
NCFS Part 2 is intended to be read in conjunction with NCFS Part 1 and outlines project information additional to the requirements of NCFS Part 1 and specific to a particular project.
Section P1.6 allows the Engineer responsible for the design the freedom to incorporate specific clauses to suit a particular project by modifying clauses given in NCFS Part 1. It is emphasised that NCFS Part 1 has been produced for a basic reinforced concrete Frame with floors to receive a screed finish and therefore any amendments through NCFS Part 2 are likely to increase the cost of the Frame.
Other sections in NCFS Part 2 cover the exchange of information necessary between the Employer and Frame Contractor at tender stage.
NCFS Part 3 provides background information on the content of NCFS Part 1 and Part 2 and explains why certain clauses have been adopted. It does not form part of Part 1 or Part 2 and should not be read or interpreted as altering the meaning of these parts.
