INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to provide specifiers and designers with information on building materials and construction details that are expected to provide enhanced levels of sound insulation compared with the standard implied in the Building Regulations Approved Document E. The construction descriptions have been made as generic as possible. In several constructions plasterboard is specified. Other sheet materials of a similar mass could possibly be used. However, all the test data reported are for constructions using plasterboard.
The achievement of good levels of sound insulation also depends on workmanship on site. The constructions described in this document have been chosen to be as proof against poor workmanship as possible. However, any construction can ultimately be let down by poor workmanship. Some advice on achieving good workmanship for a variety of construction types can be found in the companion document to this one, Quiet homes, a guide to good practice and reducing the risk of poor sound insulation between dwellings.
The document also gives advice on the following:
• methods of reducing impact noises not covered by the Building Regulations such as from doors or electrical switches,
• methods of increasing the sound insulation of facades,
• methods of controlling noise transmission within dwellings.
This document deals only with sound insulation, and other requirements such as thermal insulation and fire safety, must not be overlooked.
