Introduction
The use of glass in nearly all applications has increased in recent years. A number of cases of glass breakage have resulted in concerns, especially where the glass is in sloping glazing. Glazing falling on building users can lead to injury and, although this is relatively rare, the risks must be properly assessed and managed when using glass in these situations.
Building regulations do not currently provide advice on overhead and sloping glazing. Glazing at lower levels in windows, doors and side panels is subject to building regulation requirements where human impact is possible and these issues are also covered in BS6262: Part 4 and Approved Document N.
This book gives guidance on the risks of failure of glazing in sloping glazing and the assessment and management of those risks. This risk assessment and management should be viewed as guidance only and does not remove responsibility from professionals involved in glass contracts to carry out their work such that safety is maintained in the built environment.
