Introduction
The majority of new building developments will be located on brownfield sites which can present a broad spectrum of potential hazards to the human population and the natural environment as well as to the built environment. Because the hazards are so varied, and affect different types of receptor, investigation and treatment or remediation processes have not always been well integrated with respect to the different nature of geotechnical and geoenvironmental hazards. This report provides guidance on an integrated approach to the investigation, treatment and foundation design for buildings on brownfield and landfill sites with the objective of promoting the construction of safe, durable and economic structures in which safety and health issues are appropriately addressed. Following a description of the background to the report, this part outlines the report's objectives, scope and structure.
