Introduction
Gaskets are usually lengths of material placed as an interface in joints between two solid elements. The gasket is compressed in the joint in one or two dimensions and maintains a seal by pushing against the two surfaces. Gaskets used in construction are generally made of elastic polymeric material. Cellular rubbers are common for some types of gasket. For successful performance, the nature of the gasket, the shape of the joint, and the operating conditions of the joint (primarily the extent of movement, and the degree of exposure to rain and wind pressure) must be matched to each other.
