This Information Paper reports on a project that assessed the effect of low water usage in domestic buildings on the upstream parts of the drain and sewer system, ie those parts most likely to be affected by reductions in water use and therefore most likely to block. It provides:
- a summary of the types and characteristics of appliances that may be used for reducing water consumption in buildings
- estimates of water volumes consumed for both the present and the future
- appropriate guidance for the design of drain and sewer systems.
This guidance provides criteria for drain and sewer systems for up to 10 houses with reduced water use. Drainage within the properties and beyond the 10th house connection was outside the scope of the project, but inferences drawn from the results are included.
