There are a number of automatic door controls that can be fitted in homes to improve access for disabled and elderly people. They generally work well over time and complete replacement of a control system within the design life is rare. The high initial cost of controls is the main input to the whole life costs. Maintenance adds to the costs but this is necessary to maintain performance. Each installation needs to be considered on its own merits. In some cases, the controls may be installed in housing specifically for disabled or elderly people so they are part of the permanent fixtures and the whole life cost and performance issues can be viewed over the whole life of the building, or at least in its current use. However, more commonly, the controls are fitted in existing housing to meet the needs of an individual for a limited period of time.
