SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This scoping-study project focused on existing buildings and existing spaces, such as offices, classrooms, hospital wards and consulting rooms. The elements studied were limited to ceilings, walls, floors, windows and doors. The project did not consider furniture, fixtures, fittings or equipment, although these items will have their role in affecting the overall wellbeing of occupants. BRE's focus was on evaluating the choice of materials as solutions for the above elements, and on providing a centralised reference point of existing standards, information sources, case studies and examples of ‘what works' and ‘what does not work'. Building professionals (funders and teams delivering refurbishment projects) have expressed a need for this type of assistance to help them address, satisfactorily as well as efficiently, the numerous aspects of end users' wellbeing.
