Introduction

Part 1of this 3-part paper outlines the conceptual design process, where, in parallel with the preliminary structural design, the overall concept for protecting the structure from the environment is developed.

Part 2 provides a more in-depth discussion of the detailed design stage, starting with existing best practice for the specification of durable concrete. Specification (in terms of strength, mix proportions and constituents, and cover to reinforcement) is in accordance with current codes and standards; in this paper it is termed as basic material resistance.
