INTRODUCTION
In response to the fact that 27% of the UK's CO2 emissions are produced by housing stock, the British Homes Awards launched a competition for the Home for the Future in 2007. This gave architectural practices an opportunity to showcase their design capabilities in a home which incorporated design qualities that were attractive to prospective purchasers and had excellent environmental performance. Nine designs were shortlisted.
