The aim of achieving a sustainable masterplan is to deliver a balanced outcome for a new development that addresses all the important issues, many of which depend on the local context and differ for every development. Sustainable masterplanning is an integrated process: sustainability cannot be treated as an 'add-on' and many issues need to be considered, eg use of resources, enhancement of the site's ecology, transport strategy, to give a few examples. Two of the tools available to help with this, the Sustainable Communities wheel and GreenPrint, are briefly discussed in this Information Paper, which is based on a short extract from Masterplanning science and technology parks: a BRE guide BR 505.
