This information paper summarises the output from a series of research projects carried out by BRE in conjunction with Scott Wilson between 200 and 2004. It briefly describes the barriers to the use of industrial by-products in construction.

Slag derived from the production of zinc (ISF slag) was used to construct demonstration roadways made from concrete and asphalt. Concretes containing crushed waste refractory bricks from aluminium smelters were also produced and assessed.

The in situ performance of the roads and the leaching capacity of the materials were evaluated with favourable results. The project successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using ISF slag as a partial replacement for sand in pavement quality concrete and asphalt.
