INTRODUCTION

BRE's mission is ‘to build a better world together'. However, our planet cannot support the continued growth of living standards and consumption without a transformation in our use of natural resources and the adoption of sustainable processes and practices that ensure the continuing health of all aspects of life.

BRE has the dual responsibility of using its knowledge and influence to help others to achieve sustainability in all they do and also of demonstrating this policy in its own actions. In that context, the S Plan was established in 2008; this set about transforming the way that BRE staff think about and act on sustainability within the business.

Development of the S Plan sought to encourage both radical and incremental thinking and deliver positive outcomes. It required continuity of commitment at both corporate and individual level, joined-up thinking and the investment of time, energy and passion from all BRE staff and management.

BRE's achievements in relation to sustainability were externally recognised in the 2011 Sunday Times Best Green Companies Awards. BRE achieved first place in the ‘Best Larger Firm with Low Environmental Impact' category and eleventh place overall in the Top 60 Best Green Companies List. These awards acknowledge organisations with a pioneering and innovative approach to continually improving their environmental performance.
