This standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, performance, testing, and certification of the elements of the protective ensemble including coats, trousers, helmets, gloves, footwear, and interface items for protection from the hazards of structural fire fighting operations. This is the second edition of NFPA 1971 that combines four previous standards into one document on all ensemble elements, replacing previous editions of NFPA 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974.
