These specifications govern the fabrication of vehicular steel bridges to include the furnishing and fabrication of steel structures and the structural steel portions of other structures. Their objective is to achieve quality and value from a common specification that standardizes vehicular steel bridge fabrication in the United States. Specifically, the specifications:

• Minimize variations among projects
• Provide economy, because individual fabricators would not have to change their methods and production variables
• Allow expertise in steel bridge fabrication to be shared among states
• Enable owners to share resources, minimizing the effort each would otherwise spend to maintain their individual bridge fabrication specifications
