A gearmotor is defined as the combination of an enclosed gear drive and an electric motor with the frame of one component supporting the other, and with the motor shaft common with or directly coupled to the input pinion shaft. A gearmotor is further defined as any electro-mechanical gear drive combination designed and rated in accordance with Standard AGMA 460.04, "Practice for Gearmotors."

This standard is applicable to single and multiple stage gearmotors with spur, helical, herringbone and bevel types of gearing arranged in a fashion such that the output shaft is either concentric with, parallel to, or at a right angle to the electric motor shaft.

This standard is limited to gearmotors having an electric motor speed of 3600 rpm or less or an input pinion pitch line velocity not exceeding 5000 fpm.

Purpose

The purpose of this standard IS to list and classify the character of the load in various applications, so that a proper gearmotor can be se lected for a given service.
