This recommended procedure notes and defines carbon potential, carburizing methods, hardening methods and other critical criteria for controlling the material quality of carburized aerospace gears.

This recommended procedure divides carburized aerospace gearing into three classes depending upon the critical nature of the end use. These three classes are: Grade 6 Grade 5 Grade 4 Critical Semi-Critical Non-Critical

Grade 6 - Critical carburized gearing is used where loading may be moderate to heavy and where failure of a gear' will result in the failure of a critical system which can result in the loss of the vehicle or endanger operating personnel or passengers.

Grade 5 - Semi-Critical carburized gearing is used where failure of a gear may affect the func- -4- tion of a critical system, but another emergency system is available to perform the same function.

Grade 4 - Non-Critical carburized gearing is used where failure of the gearing would not affect the performance of the vehicle or the safety of personnel associated with the vehicle.

Materials and processes for the three classes of carburized aerospace gearing are summarized in Table 1.

Purpose

The purpose of this recommended procedure is to establish methods for specifying materials, case depths, case and core hardnesses, case and core 'structures, and carburizing processes for aerospace gearing. Aerospace gearing is used in this pro'" cedure to delineate aircraft, missile and rocket gearing.
