This guideline discusses the historical development and the resulting design procedures for integral abutments in steel girder bridges. Through the use of integral abutments designers can reduce or eliminate roadway expansion devises and associated bearibearings thus improving the long term serviceability, maintenance characteristics, and economy of construction of the steel girder bridge system.
