This study reviewed the current leak detection and leak location methods for pressurized underground piping commonly found at airports, refineries, and fuel terminals. Four methods for testing underground pipes of 6 to 18 inches in diameter and 250 feet to 2 miles in length were selected for field demonstration. These technologies were constant-pressure volumetric testing, pressure-decay testing, chemical tracer testing, and acoustic emission testing. No single leak detection system was found to work in all situations; site-specific conditions may affect any method, and combinations of methods may provide the most effective approach.
