Purpose of this Report

This document sets forth design guidance information for Automatic Flight Control Systems intended for use in transport type aircraft . The Automatic Flight Control System, here - in after referred to as the AFCS, is described as having those features for which some airlines have expressed a desire .

An efforts made to provide a composite of the features which enjoy mutual interest and support by a number of airlines in order to provide a useful reference for those engaged in the manufacture, procurement, and operation o f AFCS equipment. Every effort is made to provide the details of an airline consensus on AFCS equipment where it exists. Where no consensus exists, then that fact is also highlighted. The "COMMENTARY" sections of this document provide further background on the "what" and "why" of such diverse needs. Thus, the equipment designer/manufacturer is put on notice that he must concentrate on providing utmost design flexibility or resign himself to may short manufacturing runs to stay in the market – such a situation being an anathema to all concerned.
