PURPOSE OF THIS CHARACTERISTIC
This Document is intended to set forth the basic requirements for a new generation Air Traffic Control Transponder specifically designed for lnstal lation in commerciaf trans~ port type aircraft. Although it is acknowledged that the supersonic transport may bring about as yet undefined requirements on the ATC Transponder System, the performance requirements set forth by this Document are expected to be fully compatible with SST operatlonal needs.
The intent of this Document is to provide general and specific design guidance for the development and lnstal lation of an ATC Transponder system prlmarily for airline use. As such, this guidance wl I I include the specific requirements necessary to provide the desired operatlonal capabi llty and the standards necessary to achieve interchangeabi I ity.
