This document recommends ARINC 653 core software capabilities by which a platform supplier can enhance, extend, or modify/tailor certain aspects of the system to implement platform specific functionality, without requiring modification to the COTS ARINC 653 O/S.

There is no claim that all capabilities needed by the different platforms are defined here. This document captures experienced users' needs and it should be viewed as a minimum set of capabilities. As hardware and software evolve, additional capabilities may be added in the future. This document does not intend to be a complete definition of all the capabilities of the ARINC 653 core software.

Purpose

The objective of this part is to define additional ARINC 653 core software capabilities to ease integration on a variety of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) hardware platforms by allowing platform suppliers to extend and customize it for use with their unique hardware platform.

The objective of Part 5 is to define additional recommended capabilities when implementing ARINC 653 core software using a Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) ARINC 653 Operating System (O/S).

The capabilities described in this document provide the COTS ARINC 653 O/S suppliers with a defined set of capabilities allowing it to be extended, thus making it adaptable for use under many different platform scenarios.

Important term used in Part 5:

Platform Supplier: Integrates the hardware platform with the core software. The Platform Supplier provides and integrates the additional software capabilities needed to meet the specific needs of the platform above the capabilities provided by a COTS ARINC 653 O/S and the services defined therein.
