This document provides an overview on common knowledge related to the physical and biological fundamentals involved in the process of lighting (visible radiation) based surface disinfection.
It discusses the mechanisms of actions, applicable selection criteria such as wavelength, irradiance, photo-catalysts, exposure time and potential applications.
Further consideration is given to harmful effects, such as hazards imposed to humans involved in the process and degradation of materials potentially caused by light.
This document does not cover UV disinfection. This is discussed in ASD-STAN TR 4896.
