ASHRAE member Darren Dageforde and his wife Karen took the plunge, and their home recently became the first residential project to earn first place in the 30-year-old ASHRAE Technology Awards program. Among achievements, the Blair, Neb., house uses 95% less energy than a comparable house, and was built for 16% less. The actual cost of cooling the house for the summer of 2012, Nebraska's hottest on record, was $3.72. More remarkable, this was done without a traditional air-based furnace or cooling system.
