JESSOP JS15Cr-5Ni is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening, chromium-nickel-copper stainless steel. It offers high strength and hardness in combination with good resistance to corrosion. Corrosion resistance is inferior to that of the austenitic stainless steels developed for corrosion-resistant applications, probably inferior even to that of the higher chromium JS17Cr-4Ni, but is better than for most high-strength grades. The composition balance gives high strength and the copper enables this grade to be age hardened to still higher strengths by low-temperature heat treatment with little distortion. Typical applications include aircraft components and a variety of fabricated parts for use in corrosive, high-pressure systems.
