ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 16000-2019 provides minimum performance criteria, identified by industry consensus, for plumbing inspectors, mechanical system inspectors, plumbing plans examiners, and mechanical plans examiners. This standards series for inspectors and plans examiners of both residential and commercial applications documents the experience, education, training, and general knowledge requirements for the inspectors and examiners who play critical roles in protecting the health and safety of the general public and the industry itself.
The 2019 edition of the Series 16000 combines previous editions of ASSE 16000, Professional Qualifications Standard for the Plumbing Inspector, and ASSE 17000, Professional Qualifications Standard for the Mechanical Inspector, as well as adds professional qualifications for plumbing and mechanical plans examiners.

Applies to an individual who inspects plumbing systems, both residential and commercial.
- 16020 - Mechanical Inspector
Applies to an individual who inspects mechanical systems, both residential and commercial.
- 16040 - Plumbing Plan Examiner
Applies to an individual who performs plumbing plan reviews, both residential and commercial.
- 16050 - Mechanical Plan Examiner
Applies to an individual who performs mechanical plan reviews, both residential and commercial.
