The purpose of this American National Standard is to standardize the protocol for packetized speech, the Packetized Voice Protocol (PVP). PVP defines formats and procedures for the transport of voice information and channel-associated signaling over a packet network. This is to allow vendors to provide compatible equipment for the U.S. marketplace and to permit both the exchange and interexchange carriers to operate compatibility.
