It has been noted that the QRS test pattern, universally used for out-of-service testing of DS1 circuits, is not up to the task of determining the true performance of DS1 circuits used for the transport of non-voice, digital services. This Technical Report discusses the reasons for this failure and proposes the use of additional new test patterns that may supplement the QRS pattern when qualifying DS1 circuits for non-voice service. Also included is a discussion of additional patterns used by various carrier and non-carrier organizations as an assist when troubleshooting or further checking the capability of the DS1 circuit to support all types of user traffic.
