This method describes a procedure useful for the evaluation of the efficacy of wood preservative formulations in interior construction where conditions conducive to decay may occur. The method is applicable to solid wood, plywood, laminated veneer lumber, and wood-based composites. The procedure may be described by the term decay bin test.
In its most basic form the test exposes treated and untreated wood-based samples to pure cultures of basidiomycete wood destroying organisms in sealed bins. Samples are inspected periodically to determine the extent of decay present. The strength of the technique lies in the fact that the performance of new preservative formulations is compared to that of preservatives known to be effective under the same conditions.
