This guide addresses specific, major welding fume constituents and constituents of special health significance. Guidance for deciding which fume constituents to analyze for is given by filler metal class in Table 1 of ANSI/AWS F1.3, Evaluating Contaminants in the Welding Environment—A Sampling Strategy Guide. The analytical methods in this guide are also applicable, with some modifications, to bulk samples collected per ANSI/AWS F1.2, Laboratory Method for Measuring Fume Generation Rates and Total Fume Emission of Welding and Allied Processes. For fume constituents not addressed in this guide, current NIOSH methods are recommended.
