With respect to the evolution of the regulation on bromate control, a knowledge of hydraulics in the ozone contactor is necessary. Tracer tests have been performed on the ozone contactors (type A and B) of the Neuilly-sur-Marne plant (France). Results have shown that the hydraulic efficiency was poor (0.5). These results have been used to validate a computationfluids dynamics (CFD) modeling of these ozone contactors with a deviation of less than 10%. Then numerical optimizations of these contactors have been performed by adding baffles in compartments. Simulations showed that we could achieve a hydraulic efficiency of 0.7 and 0.8 for tank A and B respectively. Bromate models performed at the Gnrale-des-Eaux have shown that such improvement could lead to a reduction of 30% to 40% in bromate formation, for the same level of disinfection.
