Need Help?
This paper describes the basic steps the City of Bloomington, Indiana, Utility (CBU) took to gather information, calibrate and use its water distribution system model to achieve cost-saving results. A specific goal for the study was to test the value of possible improvements to the distribution system. The improvements were to improve the ability to meet maximum demand day pumping needs. The study stepped through a systematic analysis of all the pipes in the system, in order to expose those areas of the system in which most of the energy was lost due to friction. The main criteria used for the identification of areas of the system needing improvement included identifing those water mains in which the most energy was consumed during high flows. The bottlenecks in the system were identified that limited system performance under peak pumping conditions, andwhich consumed the most energy under all pumping conditions. This approach might lead to different conclusions concerning system improvements than if other criteria were used. For example, focusing instead on specific areas in the City with low pressure problems could identify specific pipes which served those areas but which might have a minimal impact on the overall system curve. Includes tables, figures.
