Drinking water utilities using chloramines for disinfection are advised to periodically review their monitoring program to operate more efficiently and ensure regulatory compliance. The three driving forces for developing a monitoring program are: regulatory compliance, process control, and customer satisfaction. This paper provides a brief overview of water quality parameters to consider when developing a chloramine monitoring program. The water quality parameters include: total chlorine residual; free chlorine residual; ammonia; nitrite and nitrate; heterotrophic plate count; pH; alkalinity; hardness; temperature; dissolved oxygen; disinfectant decay rate; total coliform bacteria; disinfection byproducts; and, monitoring locations and frequency. The purpose of this paper is to provide operators, students or others who have minimal experience or knowledge of chloramines with a basic description of water quality parameters related to the use of chloramines as a secondary disinfectant. Includes 11 references.
