The City of Mesa utilizes groundwater for a portion of its water supply, operating 35 wells in its distribution system. These wells are typically used for one to two months during the year to meet peak water demands. Because groundwater is currently and will continue to be a key component of Mesa's drinking water supply, the City decided to proactively address the impacts of both the proposed arsenic MCL and the proposed radon MCL on the continued use of their wells. With the high cost of installing and maintaining treatment systems at each well site, coupled with a lack of space for treatment facilities within the well site and the intermittent usage of the wells, one of the main elements of this study centered around the development of potential non-treatment compliance strategies. Successful implementation of these strategies will allow Mesa to cost-effectively comply with the proposed regulations for arsenic and radon. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
