The Safe Drinking Water Act envisions a partnership at federal, state, and local levels to assure continued public health protection through uniform compliance with drinking water standards across the nation. Source water protection and treatment requirements are being addressed across the nation, but distribution system requirements vary significantly from one state to another. The time has come to determine whether existing state distribution system requirements are sufficient to provide adequate public health protection across the nation. This paper discusses state and federal standards and requirements fordistribution systems. Includes 2 references.
