In an effort to make construction in the Hampton Roads region more efficient and
less costly, Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) joined with
the 16 municipalities and HRSD in 1998 to develop Regional Construction
Standards. Construction Standards are intended to simplify the design and
construction process for "typical" right-of-way improvements. The engineering firm
of McKim & Creed was selected to blend the best construction documents the
region had to offer into one concise set of documents that each municipality could
adopt. HRPDC developed, printed, and distributed two editions of the Regional
Construction Standards, which include complete front-end documents, 29
technical specifications and 64 standard details. Each municipality has committed
to using the standards on a pilot project to test the specifications. The third edition,
currently under development, will add several more technical specification sections
and details.
