Accurately assessing raw water quality is important for maximizing the performance of both new
and existing treatment facilities. For new facilities a comprehensive evaluation of raw water
quality allows proper selection of treatment processes and establishes bounds on operating
conditions. In existing facilities, plant performance can be optimized and the need for upgrading
and rehabilitation of processes can be identified. In this paper this approach is implemented for
a new 70-mgd facility serving the Metropolitan area of Salt Lake City.
