The El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) has been in the water recycling business for over
20 years. In 1979 EID served secondary treated effluent to a golf course for irrigation and a
lumber mill for log watering. In 1989, a developer stepped forward with a proposal to recycle
water from another wastewater treatment plant for a major proposed golf course. This project
was completed in 1992. Today, these two distribution systems are connected and deliver
tertiary treated recycled water to two golf courses, more than 60 commercial sites, and 1,200
"dual plumbed" homes using recycled water in both front and back yard landscaping. This paper discusses the development and implementation of this successful recycled water program.
