In the chlorine dioxide-chlorite ion system, a 1:1 complex (Cl2O4-) forms which has a significant
absorbance in the UV-visible region. The formation constant of this complex is low (around 1 M-1),
but it has a significant influence on the spectrophotometric measurement of ClO2 due to its high
molar absorbance. In this work, the formation constant and molar absorbance of the complex were
determined using spectrophotometric and numerical methods. The determined formation constant
is 0.25 M-1. The effect of this complex on the ClO2 photometric measurement is demonstrated. Includes 29 references, tables, figures.
