As a consequence of regulatory requirements and enforcement, most water companies
have made significant changes to their operational management processes with tighter risk
assessment procedures and increased staff training in order to reduce the incidents of
discoloration events. However, these measures are often applied uniformly company wide
without taking into account the underlying vulnerability of an area. This paper describes the
background to discoloration incidents in the United Kingdom (UK) and their causes and presents a risk assessment
method that can be used to target remedial measures cost-effectively. The paper is based on
research that is currently being undertaken for UK Water Industry Research Ltd (UKWIR)
entitled "Managing and Controlling Discoloration Incidents" and builds on work previously
published in the UKWIR report "Hydraulic Characterization of Deposits and Review of Sediment
Modelling". Includes 6 references, table, figure.
