Alberta Environment (AENV) is conducting a comprehensive review of drinking water systems across the Province
as part of its Water for Life Strategy to accomplish the goal of assuring Alberta's access to safe, secure supplies of
drinking water. The first phase (Phase 1) of this review, completed in January 2004, was undertaken to identify
challenges facing drinking water systems and to estimate the potential investment required to meet these challenges.
To accomplish this task, 530 individual water supply and treatment facilities were assessed with respect to raw
water supply, treatment process and operational issues. This paper provides an overview of the "Water for Life
Strategy" program, the treatment facility assessment work undertaken and how the information is being used to
determine long-term solutions to address the challenges and ensure the provision of safe drinking water for
communities. Includes tables.
