This paper discusses the premise that the traditional system of rainwater harvesting is a viable approach to meeting the need of water in
scattered settlements in the Indian state of Rajasthan, where other sources are either inadequate or less reliable. The paper describes both the status of water resources in India, and the process of rainwater harvesting practiced in the Rajasthan villages. Several key areas where improvement to the process of rainwater harvesting is needed are listed, along with different water harvesting structures that include embanked village ponds, covered underground tanks, and deep soil plots surrounded by natural catchment zones. Newer technologies are discussed that include: percolation tanks; gully plugging; and, contour bunds. The paper discusses two forms of rainwater harvesting: artificial recharge of groundwater; and, roof top or surface catchment water harvesting by storing water in open or covered tanks. Appropriate field conditions for optimum use of rainwater are provided. Includes 6 references, tables.
