The North Marin Water District (District) was formed in 1948. The District offices are located in the City of Novato, in Marin County, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. The area of the District is approximately 100 square miles with an estimated population of 58,000 currently being served. The District has 5 departments and 55 equivalent full-time employees. This paper discusses a project by the District of systematic identification and disposal of records that had reached the end of the retention period specified on the retention schedule. Topics covered include: transfer of historically valuable records to the District archives; removal of non-current records from active office storage; and, protection and security backup of records essential to District Authority and operations. Includes tables.
