This poster paper presents information on the Awwa Research Foundation's Ultraviolet (UV) Knowledge Base, a collection of information on UV technology from 30 utilities and stored in a Microsoft Access database. The information will be used to develop onsite test plans for nine utilities. Phase 2 of the project approach includes:
conduct on-site evaluations;
develop UV system troubleshooting guide; develop VB analysis tools; and,
develop an Internet version of the database. Phase 3 includes:
conduct North American survey;
analyze results and develop recommendations. A summary of site visits includes:
methods developed for field verification of UV sensor and dose monitoring
equations; CAF index calculations using sensor equation can evaluate long-term lamp
aging and fouling;
dose monitoring equations developed using field measurements agreed
well with validation data and historic dose monitoring data;
significant overdosing can occur due to operation within design conditions
of flow and UVT combined with ballast turndown limitations;
significant on-line UVT errors (>2%) observed;
good agreement with duty and reference UV sensors observed; minimal external sleeve fouling and lamp aging observed; and,
internal sleeve fouling can be significant.
