This powerpoint presentation lists the challenges faced by small water systems as:
water is vulnerable to microbial contamination
because source protection is difficult;
part-time operators with insufficient training in new
technologies are common;
lack of clear documented operating, maintenance
and response plans; and,
disinfection byproducts caused by interaction of
organics and chlorine. Biological threats to small systems include: bacterial pathogens shigella, salmonella, E.coli that can cause
diarrheal disease;
Protozoal threats of Giardia and Cryptosporidium that cause
diseases and are very hardy in the environment; and,
Natural Water Problems of
iron, radon, manganese, hydrogen sulfide,
organics, hardness. Factors for improving Smaller Water Systems include: full water sampling and analysis required; data analysis and conceptual design factors; develop a full Process and Instrumentation Diagram; proposal with budget pricing; final design drawings; manufactured
