This powerpoint presentation provides information on the transferability of ISO 14001 EMS
Program to a Drinking Water Quality
Management Standard (DWQMS). Topics covered include: Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) Operations Background;
Elements of DWQMS and ISO 14001;
Risk Assessment;
Implementation Models;
Challenges; and,
Resource Requirements and Financial Sustainability.
Summary findings include:
elements of the DWQMS are similar to ISO 14001
standard;
risk assessment in DWQMS identifies the critical
control points of a water treatment facility;
risk assessment in EMS identifies aspects of the
facility that has significant environmental impacts; EMS requires identification of legal and other
requirements, DWQMS requires compliance with
applicable legislation and regulations;
staff training and competency requirements are
similar for both standards due to system
maintenance and legislative requirements; and,
financial cost for DWQMS may differ from the EMS
based on the risk assessment approach.
