This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a comparison between dual purpose ultraviolet (UV) reactors and UV advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Mechanisms of MIB and Geosmin
reduction are addressed, along with factors that affect
UV AOP performance, system comparisons, and design considerations. Summary findings of the study include: UV disinfection is a proven and widely
used technology for disinfection;
recent advances have allowed UV
reactors to operate in "disinfection mode"
or in "AOP mode";
UV AOPs are a promising technology for
taste and odor reduction as well as other
emerging contaminants; UV AOP systems have unique design
considerations compared to UV
disinfection systems;
higher doses are needed;
peroxide is needed for removal of some
contaminants; larger footprint and power requirements; and,
dual purpose operation may provide cost
savings compared to GAC and ozone.
