This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of disinfection, nitrification, and lead corrosion. Research objectives included the following: evaluate the effect of nitrification products, nitrate and nitrite on lead leaching; and,
elucidate the biological mechanisms that
contribute to lead corrosion. The experimental setup is provided, and presentation conclusions indicate the following:
the products of nitrification, particularly nitrate,
may cause significant lead corrosion in drinking
water systems;
more importantly, nitrate facilitates lead corrosion
by attacking the protective film formed on lead
surfaces in tap water; and,
the presence of nitrifying bacteria become directly
involved in lead corrosion by providing an
alternative electron acceptor, for the oxidative
dissolution of lead. Includes table, figures.
