This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the challenges facing public utilities. UCMR 2 new challenges are categorized by the following:
the Knowns - resource and financial burdens
associated with monitoring; and,
the Unknowns - risk communication, public health
benefits, and treatment impacts. The possibility of source water protection strategies
as an alternative to contaminant control is presented. Presentation conclusions indicate the following:
unregulated contaminant monitoring stretches financial
resources for utilities even further; utilities face risk communication challenges if they detect
these contaminants in drinking water supply; we need the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
help in developing common effective public
education and communication messages that instill
confidence in us and the process; and, a comprehensive source water protection program could
be a cost effective method for reducing occurrences and
detections. Includes tables.
